Silly Me
Posted in: Illustrations
Sometimes I’m silly. I don’t think. Like there was this one time (at band camp. sorry I always think that with those words), I was in the mood for a donut, so we went to get me one. And seeing them all there, all those delicious yummy donuts, I didn’t think. I had visions of donuts dancing in my head.

Yep, I ordered a dozen. For ME and oh yeah…ME.
That probably explains why I now have a new old sewing machine.

There were several sitting in the reptile store we go to. And every time we went, I saw them sitting there, and thought: how cool, old sewing machines. The owner likes collecting antiques, that’s why they were there. He was trying to find a nice one. And it was sort of hit and miss so he had a pile of them. Well one day I asked about them and found out they were for sale.

So without doing any research or even really looking at them, I bought one. The owner threw in extra drawers with it.
How did I make my choice? Not really with any sense. Alan later said, “why didn’t you choose one that was in better shape?” and some other very smart questions that I cannot remember. Which I did not have answers to.
My reasoning was: I liked the drawers.

Now what am I going to do with it?!? I would like to fix it up but I don’t have a clue. And where am I going to put it? Right now it’s just in the garage. Well at least I’ve done some research. It’s a Singer D series, made between 1908-1909. Silly me, with a 100 year old sewing machine that I don’t know what in the world I’m going to do with. At least I didn’t buy a dozen.

Yeah, I do that dozen-doughnuts thing too. I have yet to buy a random 100-year-old sewing machine though. But hey, pretty drawers!
Good luck figuring out what to do with it.
Wow! That’s a fantastic find! I bet if you sanded it down well and gave it a nice lacquer finish, it would look quite splendid in the living room. The drawers are indeed lovely. You’re very lucky to have found this, table, foot-pedal and all.
Not too long ago I saw a blog post where someone did exactelly the same thing as you. They then showed, and talked about how they restored it all.
I will have a look for the url and get back to you.
I think the drawers are gorgeous too! Good find.
My mum has a similar machine, except the drawers aren’t as nice (she doesn’t sew at all, so yeah you can say she’s pretty impulsive! Lol)
It’s plonked in our living room like a showpiece decorated with small photoframes. Always a conversation piece!
Okay, found the links.
Start at the bottom and work your way up through them.
Hope it helps

WOW! If I found one, I’d buy a glass slab and place it on the top. That way, you have a really cool side table. I dunno what you’d do with the actual sewing machine though. haha!
I was thinking the same as Jo … only I was aiming for a marble slab top in shiny black and greys to go with the pedal and flywheel. A new coat of wood finish, maybe clean up and brush over the metal work and it would make a fabulous little writing table … or laptop table!
Love the sewing machine. Very pretty. Love the drawers too.
how much was it? It look so vintage, and well… cool! I would have bought it, too ;]
It was $50. I could have bought fabric with that!!
I have one that was given to me by a friend and I use it as a sofa table behind my couch. I love it!
I have a sewing machine like yours…almost identical! It still has it’s original finish and looks pretty good still. It just sat in on old lady’s house until she died and then her son sold it to us for $100. Anyways, I use mine for my “new” sewing machine stand. My kids thinks it’s funny that my new machine sit on top of my old machine. I took the old machine out once to see if it works… it does… but it’s so old and rusty I would be afraid it would stain my fabrics…
I was thinking about using the stand for a sewing machine stand too!
I learned how to sew on a machine just like that!
My mom made 4 prom dresses on it, countless toy-storage-bags, I made the canopy for my bed on it…
Wow! Thanks for the trip down memory lane!
