Nestle back from the vet's after her seizure

I had a scare today. It started out a normal day with an appointment at the vet’s for Nestle. I wanted to get her leg rechecked and to change the dosage of her medication. We pulled into the parking lot and got Nestle out of the car. That’s when she started to drool, bare her teeth, and I guess you’d say foam at the mouth. She’s done this before, the drooling, a couple of times. It’s always in the parking lot. We didn’t know why. We just figured she smelled something funny or was having a strange reaction to the plants in that area. Usually it lasts only moments.

But today she did that, then stiffened up, fell over, and started peeing. Alan picked her up and I grabbed Isabelle and ran into the vet’s office crying and possibly yelling. I’m not sure, I was so scared. I was saying/yelling that Nestle was having a seizure. I was so scared I can’t even remember how I was holding Isabelle, that’s how freaked out I was. I think I was carrying her all weird, like under one of my arms because a very kind lady in the waiting room said some calm words, something about sitting the baby down and then helped me sit down.

A couple of hospital staff came out with a blanket to carry Nestle to the back. They gave her some valium for the seizure then brought her into a room with us. It was frightening. Nestle was unsteady on her feet, falling over. She didn’t want to lay down and was banging her head around on the walls as she was walking. It was the valium.

So basically we don’t know if the seizure is related to the problem with her leg. It might be the stress/excitement from being at the vet’s. Since the drooling has only happened there, that leads the vet to think it may be that. We don’t know.

On the drive home we put Nestle with us, in front of Isabelle’s seat, instead of in the back. Isabelle was singing a little song about Nestle. Nestle was looking so happy just sitting there and the light was coming in just right. I took my camera out and shot a few pictures.

And then Isabelle asked for her picture to be taken, “cheese me, mama!”
Cheese me, mama!
In that moment I could forget anything was wrong.

  1. Oh dear – poor you! What a fright you must have had. Hope dear Nestle’s feeling better now. She does certainly look all happy having her little buddy with the cute shoes sing to her.

  2. that IS scary. wow. glad everything turned out well.

  3. Oh, Kuky! I’m so sorry that you’re having to deal with such scary and sad things. Big hugs and warm thoughts coming your way.

  4. How scary! Glad to hear Nestle’s doing better, hope it was just the stress of a vet visit–does the vet have any advice on making her less anxious?

I love how your daughter says “cheese me!” when she wants her picture taken.

  5. Good thoughts and hugs for the fright you’ve been through. I’d feel pretty confident it is the stress of going to the vet that causes those symptoms, since she hasn’t had them at any other time. She looks SO happy in the car — maybe a combo of the valium and how much she loves Isabelle and the rest of you. You would never know she had been through a bad time from looking at her there.

  6. aw, I’m so sorry about Nestle. I hope she’s well now!

  7. I am so glad there are such nice people out there to take care of God’s creatures. Nestle is one lucky dog. PS your blog is very cool. I love your cartoons.

  8. I have had three dog who have had seizures, and it tends to be hereditary. All of them also lived to be very old, and it is managable with medications. It’s terrifyingly scary, but hugging, holding, and massaging is the best way to deal with the seizure until it passes. The first sign tends to be the stiffening up and kind of limping in circles. Then, you grab and hug them and say sweet nothings (sounds weird, but it calms them). Also, all three of the dogs we had became SUPER thirsty after the seizures, so some water might be helpful for you to give her after a seizure.

Sorry to hear about your scare, best wishes to you :)
