Almost There

Pattern #12
I think I’m almost there, my perfect top for the summer. It’s nice, simple, AND I can wear a regular bra! Yay!

Patterns 11 and 12
It’s pattern #12 from ISBN 4579110439 again (or 9784579110438, I never know what number to put anymore).

I automatically enlarged it knowing that size was an issue. And I also left the bow off. As usual, I started with a muslin. I got as far as finishing the neckline and one armhole. That’s when I decided I liked it enough to use real fabric. But when I finished it, I didn’t like it! I actually stood there, looking in the mirror, wondering if I was very tired when I had decided to make it.

Gathers at the neckline

But then after wearing it a bit, I changed my mind. So, yes, I think it’s almost perfect. The only problem: the neckline is a bit low. Or maybe it’s too wide. You can’t tell that from the picture though.

On the weekend I wore it out and found myself tugging it up because you could see a little bit of my bra cup near the straps. Maybe I enlarged the neckline too much? I’ll have to figure that out and then I see this in a more summery color.

  1. SUPERcute top on you. Very flattering neckline. If you have to adjust it, don’t go too crazy because it looks great in the photo.

  2. I was thinking, looking at the picture, “That neckline looks perfect for wearing necklaces.” Plus, wider necks leave more skin uncovered for coolness in the hot summer. But bra-peeking is no good. At least for this one, could you add a little ruffle to the inside of the neckline along the boobs … like lace or something? Kinda of like this alteration at The Fray: http://thefray.typepad.com/thefray/2007/09/threadless-alte.html

  3. OOH I love that top on you and the color is gorgeous.

  4. Oh the bows look sweet though, but I really like your top, can’t see it indeed on the picture if the neckline is too wide. But if you have to keep on tugging up, that’s no fun.

  5. I think it’s beautiful, but the neckline does look a little wide. From the picture, anyway. I agree, maybe some lace on this one and then redraw the neckline a smidge narrower? Now I have to get that book, just for that pattern :) .

  6. I like the wide neckline, but it is all in how you feel and what makes you comfortable. I’ve seen others making items from the book you are using… How hard is it to follow the patterns? I’m just curious, I’ve never tried to make something when the instructions weren’t in English. Could be a fun challenge?

I love the color on you. It did photograph nicely. and you can really showcase great necklaces with it too.

  7. I have really appreciated your quest for the perfect summer top. I would really like to sew like that if I had the time.

  8. It’s beautiful! The color and style really work for you.

  9. I made this top too, and it does have a low neckline. So it’s definitely not too low because of your enlarging the pattern. I ended up wearing a plain tank top underneath for some modesty. It’s difficult keeping the neckline up while holding a baby!
