Harry Potter Weekend

It’s been a weekend filled with Harry Potter. There’s been reading of Harry Potter. I’m still working at rereading the fifth book. And then there was the watching of Harry Potter. Earlier Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire was on tv. And I realized I’ve never really watched it. How is that possible?! So I’ve put all the Harry Potter movies on my queue. And there’s been sewing Harry Potter. What you say. How does one sew Harry Potter?

Well by sewing a skirt inspired by the Harry Potter movies of course. I must have found this tutorial back when I made Isabelle’s pleated dress. I was probably searching for pleating tutorials. I don’t have any strong desires to wear a Hogwart’s uniform but I liked how the skirt looked so I bookmarked it. And so when the urge to sew hit combined with all the Harry Potter reading going on around here of course the first thing that came to mind was to sew a Harry Potter skirt.

I made it in muslin just to see how it all came together. And I love it! I love the shape of it, the color, and how simple it was to make. Well the pleat part threw me for a bit of a loop but once I remembered Isabelle’s dress it was easy. Now I will need to make it using real fabric. I would love to wear the muslin one out but it’s so thin you can see my panties from behind. And that’s something I don’t love, showing my panties off. And plus when I practice sew I use a long stitch so it’s easy to rip out. So a proper skirt must be made.

Hmm…now to decide what kind of fabric. Solid or patterned? Alan said you can barely see the pleat on Isabelle’s dress because of the pattern. He didn’t even notice it until I pointed it out. What do you think, solid or patterned?

Ok it’s late and I want to read some more Harry Potter so off I go. What am I talking about? It’s crazy late. I should go to bed. More sewing and Harry Potter tomorrow.

  1. Solid.

That skirt makes your legs look wickedly skinny. Nice.

  2. We saw the movie last night! So it’s been a HP weekend even here. I vote for a solid skirt too.

  3. Yup, definitely solid.

  4. solid indeed! and yes, skinny legs, I must make a skirt like that too!

  5. Normally I’m a pattern person, but in this case I’d go with solid. Cute!

I’m so out of the Harry Potter loop, it is ridiculous. I think I read the first book (hides under rock).

  6. Your skirts lovely. I think a print would be ok, actually, maybe a small print.
Have you seen the Order of the Phoenix. I love Luna’s crochet sweater!
    Barbara C.

  7. The skirt is very very cute. I vote solid, because the pleats are too cool to miss. :)

  8. No Barbara C., I haven’t watched the Order of the Phoenix. :( Alan and I haven’t been to watch a movie together since I was pregnant with Isabelle. We’ve been talking about going to a drive in with her and bringing some toys along and letting her roam in the back of the car but haven’t actually done it yet.

And Kari, didn’t you like the first Harry Potter? The first time I read it I enjoyed it but wasn’t gaga over it. But I enjoyed rereading it the second time around after the second book came out.

  9. CUTE! It’s a great skirt and I think you should make one solid and one patterned.

Am mourning the end of HP7 (and the series) but loved the book, as emotionally exhausting as it was to read.

  10. I have a new tutorial on my blog. I need you to tell me what you think. I don’t know if anyone understands it but me (hehe). Tell me what parts seem fuzzy.By the way, tutorials are ROUGH!

  11. And, love the skirt!

  12. I think I liked it OK. I’m not too into fiction in general. I always read it and think “This didn’t even happen. Some person just WROTE this.” (Rolls eyes at self) I guess I need to work on my ability to suspend disbelief. ;)

I did read all three Lord of the Rings books. So I get credit for that! Maybe if I read a later Harry Potter I will like it better than the first one…
