Working On Outfits (Or So Many Pictures of Dolly that You Must Be Bored to Tears)
Posted in: Sewing

Did I mention that dolly is based on the pregnant doll my sister gave me? Except my dolly isn’t pregnant. I started with some plain fabric to figure out her outfit. Once I figured it out I made the wrap with the real fabric, this Asian looking fabric. It was hell to work with. It frayed like crazy, even with me pinking it. So I tried something else.

Helen’s dolly had a top wrap. So I made one as well. This time I tried a different design, using french seams. I couldn’t get the armholes to my liking and the fabric was hard to work with, very slippery.

I sent the pictures to my sister for advice. She liked the test outfit, the plain one the best. Me too. The red just doesn’t work for me.
So back to the drawing board. Some easier to work with fabric and not such a strong color. And I came up with this.

It’s my favorite. The wrap is reversible and the armholes are just the way I like them. Finally an outfit for dolly! Now she just needs a name.
How about Wayan? I found it on a baby name site. It means first born child in Balinese. She’s my first dolly in my planned set.

She is even more beautiful today. I love all of her outfits — even the red one with the top wrap. I think that would be cute on a human being. (I actually typed “human bean” first.)
She has such an expressive face with such tiny details, just like your drawings. How in the world does that work? (My amazement at your artistic talent is showing again.)

Michelle I tried to email you back a reply but don’t see a listing for your address.
I love my pregnant doll! But a lot of people think it’s disturbing. I think it’s the hole with the baby inside that creeps them out.

I love sister-stuff like the pregnant doll. Who else would have known you’d totally love that?!
All the dresses are cool, I think the key is the way you fold them. The way the first one is folded looks the best. I like the fabric of the red one - it’s almost like a kimono. Ditto the pink.
I love the doll’s head, too. She’s almost like a doodle come to life. She has lots of personality.
