Clusters?

Ok I’m stuck. I need a little help. This just looks wrong. You can see some kind of pattern there but it doesn’t look right. It’s supposed to be a cluster stitch. It looks like a tangled mess. And I just kept knitting row after row just hoping that somehow it would start looking like the cardigan in the magazine.

The directions for the cluster 5 says: Pass next 5 sts to RH needle dropping extra loops, pass these 5 sts back to LH needle, ([k1, p1] twice, k1) into all 5 sts tog wrapping yarn twice around needle for each st.

What am I doing wrong?? Why doesn’t it look like the picture? Click here for close up of what the clusters on the bottom of the cardigan are supposed to look like. Help please! Anyone have a clue?

Update: I am an idiot. I think I know what I’ve done wrong. Will post about it after I’ve frogged it and started over.

I’m not quite sure about the dropping of the extra loops…what came before this?

When you pass the 5 stitches to the right are you slip them knitwise or purlwise - maybe you could try doing it the opposite of what you have been doing?

Ahh! I keep going over it but I agree is confusing.

you can try http://www.knittinghelp.com and ask someone in the forum if they know…(they’ve helped me knit a bobble).

Hi! If you need some help, I’ll do my best! I’m not too sure what’s going on in your photo, so if you could post a step-by-step of your interpretation of the directions that might help me.

Don’t be too hard on yourself. I think it’s a cruel twist to take a physical and visual medium like knitting and crocheting and explain it with text. Pattern books should come with swatches and a nice old lady who sits next to you while you try a new pattern.

The first time I try a new pattern I always do it wrong. No matter what. I’m not sure what the deal is, but I’ve decided that doing things wrong the first time I try them is a part of my creative process (sound good, eh?). How much fun would projects be if you always did them right the first try and didn’t have the satisfaction of finally figuring it out?

Kudos to you for having the balls to ask for help. That’s so much cooler than giving up. :)

I didn’t see a big tangled mess. I thought that it was beautiful flowers and thought to myself, “Wow, you can knit flowers without crocheting?” I hadn’t even realized it was suppossed to be the cardigan you showed me last Saturday. Never the less, try to remember your goof-up so I can one day replicate that. It would make a lovely trim.
