The AFP test is notoriously WRONG! I got a positive on my first pregnancy, opted not to have an amnio after having an additional ultrasound that looked normal, and gave birth to a normal child. For my second pregnancy, the AFP came back just fine. I ended up finding a birth defect during an ultrasound that I had during my eighth month due to other health problems. So, hang in there!

I did have an amnio with the second one, during my ninth month of pregnancy, because they wanted to see if the baby had any chromosomal abnormalities in addition to the birth defect. It feels a bit like being punched in the stomach -- it doesn't hurt, but it kind of takes your breath away for a split second. Get plenty of rest after the amnio. You'll probably feel a bit tired, but you will also feel a bit emotional and a good nap will help.

Good luck! Let me know how you're doing.
